Basic Interior Design Principles For Beginners

Interior design is the artwork and craftsmanship of magnifying the building interior to make the living space healthy and aesthetically gratifying. Interior designer is a person who designs, analyses, harmonizes, and handles such type of projects. It is an all-around profession that comprises concept building, planning of available space, site analysis, research, coding, interacting with project administrator, and then the design implementation & proper execution.

Interior designing needs a lot of creativity, innovation, and potential to do things uniquely. There are a lot of fundamentals that a designer should be aware of before diving into this world. We have discussed below some of the best interior design principles for beginners, go through them and give some boost to your knowledge.

Some basic interior design principles as follows:

It implies to the managed arrangement of components of similar visual authority to obtain a visual equilibrium. The phase of balance can only be reached by equally distributing the components visual weight. We can achieve balance by three traditional approaches, such as Radial, Asymmetrical, and Symmetrical.

The radial balance comprises a pivotal piece from where all other components appear to expand for organizing themselves in an orbicular arrangement.

In Asymmetrical, we can use any component with odd numbers by fixing an imaginary focal point. However, the asymmetrical balance is slightly tough to obtain as compared to that of symmetrical. The result produced is more spontaneous and dynamic when related to the previous one.

In Symmetrical, space is distributed into two halves focused on a pivotal axis, and these both halves are evenly requited for giving out a smooth texture to the surrounding.

The unity principle emphasizes the truth that there should be a harmonious and uniform connection between all the components that are in use. Interior design must assist as a visual model for an individual to know about the living area. Without the assistance of unity, the visual model will leave the person with confusion. A fair transition should be there between all the components, and they must complement each other. Solid knowledge of Object Alignment, Similarity of texture/ pattern/colour, Object Spacing (Proximity), Grouping (Repetition) of elements depending on matching, Coinciding and Production of interior design components are some of the approaches to obtain ‘Unity’ in the arrangement of interior design.

It typically implies a consistent transition among various interior design components. This transition is necessary to manage a visual tempo within components with varying visual weights. Components repeated in a systematic order and the spaces among them form a feeling of rhythm. In any living room, we can achieve rhythm by obeying these 3-ways – Progression, Alternation, and Repetition.

Progression: The components in it are organized in descending or ascending order depending on their colour, size, or any other distinguishing features.

Alternation: It is the process of building rhythm by substituting more than one component in a pre-planned style, such as ABCABCABC or ABCDABCD, and so on.

Repetition: It implies the repetitious use of the interior design components such as shape, texture, pattern, colour, texture, or any other physical attributes like home décor items in an orderly way.

Recurrent components like texture, shape, or colour can assist in consolidating space and forming a smooth visual experience. Poorly managed carpeting, varying colour schemes, or choose ‘n’ mix windows all generate uncertainty in an area. You should have proper knowledge of how to use the repetition components to make the space visually attractive.

It is one of the most crucial interior design principles that state that for a living space, the furniture, or any art piece should play the role of an attention grabber. Components such as texture, pattern, and colour should be used for indicating a specific centre point. These components should be used in an approach that the central point manages the entire items used for decoration and draws the living space unitedly.

It refers to the variation in the object’s colour or intensity of light that distinguishes them from each other. The contrast can be obtained in interior design by three basic components; these are space, form, and colour. We can use prints or cushions of two different colours, such as white & black, for achieving contrast and make it possible to distinguish an object.

We can also achieve contrast by mixing more than one forms. For instance, a rectangular sofa & a circular mirror can be combined to disseminate & balance the consideration within these both items. By efficiently distributing the available space into usable negative & positive spaces, contrast can also be achieved in a living room.

This is one of the most fundamental principles of interior designing. It guarantees that objects set in any living room or other place seem like they are deeply associated with one another. Be it the shape, dimension, colour, or size of the items; a balance must be settled among them and should manage the symmetry.
